Short drumsticks (33–38 cm) are easier to hold and handle. They are generally preferred for fast and precise playing, especially when chaining many movements or playing quick rhythms. The balance of the stick is more centered toward the hand, which allows for a lighter touch and favors speed. This gives the drummer more control, an advantage in styles that require finesse and subtlety, such as jazz or acoustic music.
Because of their shorter leverage, short sticks usually produce less power and volume than longer sticks. Many teachers recommend shorter sticks (such as 5A or 7A) for beginners, since they are less tiring to use and help develop control.
